The driving force of this ecosystem is the Juan de Fuca Eddy, a seasonal nutrient-rich circular current that creates one of the most productive ocean ecosystems in North America.
These ocean waters are:
- vital for aboriginal cultures thousands of years old
- one of the most productive fishing grounds in North America
- used for recreation, tourism and shipping
Big Eddy provides an excellent opportunity for international cooperation. A Canada-US partnership in this region will allow for :
- coordination of research
- coordination of management
- coordination of conservation efforts
