Symposium on Use and Management

We invite you to attend a symposium on the use and management of the international marine ecosystem of western Vancouver Island, British Columbia and Olympic Peninsula, Washington, known as the Big Eddy.

Purpose

This symposium will bring together stakeholders, managers and decision makers to:

  • gain an understanding of the current and historical use and management of the Big Eddy ecosystem;
  • share information about projects and initiatives in the area;
  • share information and perspectives about transboundary marine issues in the area;
  • build broad support and momentum for international cooperation.

 

Who should attend

This symposium will bring together relevant stakeholders, communities, managers, and decision makers from Canada and the United States of all marine uses and activities, including fishing (aboriginal, recreational and commercial), shipping, recreation, tourism and other marine industries.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, October 11-13, 2006.

Registration

Please complete the registration form by September 8, 2006 and send it by fax (604-629-8532) or mail to the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society. Please fill out a complete form for each person that will be attending from your agency or organization.

Early bird registration fee for the event is $50 CDN before September 8, 2006. Payment after September 8 is $100 CDN. This includes coffee, breakfast and lunch while at the event.

Program

The detailed program, including evening events, will be available on http://bigeddy.net in July.

Spaces are available for posters and displays regarding projects and initiatives about the management and use of the area. Please take this opportunity to help educate other participants.

Accommodation

If you require accommodations, please make reservations right away. We have reserved rooms at a special rates starting at $85.00 CDN per night at the Best Western Tin Wis Resort. The rooms are being held under Big Eddy Symposium (Group 1478) until September 8. Reservations made after September 8 are subject to availability (the same rate will apply).

Travel

In order to save money and minimize our environmental impact, we are providing an opportunity for group travel to Tofino from Victoria and Nanaimo, British Columbia. Participants from Olympic Penin-sula or Vancouver can take the ferry to either Victoria or Nanaimo and join us there. Travel cost will be $40-80 CDN for return travel on a deluxe coach, depending on the number of participants.
