International Scope

The Big Eddy initiative takes a holistic view of the transboundary ecosystem off the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, and the Olympic Penninsula in Washington State. We recognize our shared concerns.

This project provides a unique opportunity for US-Canada cooperation on oceans management.

Big Eddy Initiative Goals

  • Increase public awareness and recognition of the existence of a unique ecosystem that crosses the international border.
  • Maintain a healthy ecosystem and sustainable use of its resources.
  • Promote Big Eddy as an initiative for transboundary ecosystem-based oceans management.
  • Build a framework and facilitate a forum for discussion and the creation of an international body to look after the Big Eddy ecosystem.

Big Eddy Initiative Objectives

  • Cooperative management: Develop a common vision of management, use and conservation for the Big Eddy region across the political border. Facilitate a process of continuing dialogue and a forum in which cooperative management can occur.
  • Education and outreach: Foster understanding and expand public awareness and recognition of this marine region and the benefits of ecosystem-based management and international cooperation and collaboration.
  • Research and monitoring: Promote dialogue, partnerships, and information exchange in research and monitoring
